"In light of this significant activity, it has been decided to release five Lebanese civilians who were arrested in areas of southern Lebanon under the control of the Israeli military," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office wrote in a statement.

There, the remains found are described as belonging to "victims who were kidnapped and murdered in the mid-1980s by terrorist organizations."

One of the five Lebanese detainees was handed over on Thursday, the International Committee of the Red Cross announced.

At the end of June, a US-brokered framework agreement was signed to achieve peace between Israel and Lebanon. However, the Shiite militia Hezbollah was not part of the agreement, and Israel's attacks in Lebanon have continued.
