These are the remains of 24-year-old police officer Ran Gvili, who was killed in connection with the Palestinian Islamist movement's attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Israel announced earlier on Monday that the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt will be opened to pedestrians if and when the remains are found and returned. Israel said this would be on a limited basis: pedestrians only, no vehicles, and subject to Israeli customs checks.
The Rafah border crossing has been a bottleneck for supplies sent to Gaza. Under the ceasefire agreement, the crossing is to be opened.
