Israel has attacked the Syrian army's facilities near Mazzeh airport, says SOHR chief Rami Abdel Rahman, adding that it includes arms depots, among other things.
The exact reason for the air raids is unclear. Analysts suggest, according to The Telegraph, that Israel may be taking advantage of the turmoil following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad to destroy military materiel.
The reinforcement along the border with Syria is taking place "to ensure the security of communities in the Golan Heights and for Israeli citizens", according to a statement from the Israeli military (IDF).
Already on Saturday, when Islamist-led rebel forces advanced towards Damascus, Israel announced that it had entered the UN-controlled buffer zone. This was to assist the peacekeeping forces.
Following the fall of the al-Assad regime, additional forces are now being sent to the area, citing the "possibility of armed individuals entering the zone", according to a statement from Israel's military (IDF).
At the same time, it is emphasized that the IDF will not interfere in internal Syrian affairs.
The buffer zone between Israel and Syria is located on Syrian territory in the country's southwestern corner, east of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It is separated by the so-called Alpha line along the Israeli border and the Bravo line on the Syrian side.
