After Israel on Wednesday evening boarded the Gaza convoy Global Sumud Flotilla's ship on international waters and deprived about 450 activists of their freedom, the information about their situation was initially scarce.
But when it became clear that many had been taken to the Ketziot prison in southern Israel, reports of abuse also began to emerge.
According to the Swedish Global movement to Gaza, on Sunday, at least three of the nine Swedes had still not been allowed to meet with legal counsel.
Greta Thunberg has told embassy staff about harsh treatment and dehydration, with "insufficient amounts of both water and food", according to an email from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to the climate activist's relatives, which The Guardian has seen.
"Treated like animals"
Similar testimonies have come from other activists since they were released.
We were treated like animals, says Malaysian Hazwani Helmi to Reuters at the airport in Istanbul.
She also claims that Thunberg was treated roughly and forced to wear an Israeli flag. The American citizen Windfield Beaver tells Reuters that Thunberg was "pushed into" a room when Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir arrived at the prison.
The Italian journalist Lorenzo D'Agostino tells the news agency AFP that the inmates were woken up repeatedly during the nights, and that dogs and laser sights were used "to scare us".
Planning a complaint
The Swedish activists' legal counsel Sena Eliküçük tells TT that the treatment of the Swedish activists will be reported to the relevant UN authorities.
According to Eliküçük, several of them have been denied medicine, including Member of Parliament Lorena Delgado Varas.
The French left-wing party LFI claims that four of its politicians - including French-Swedish Emma Fourreau, who sits in the EU Parliament's left-wing group - have begun a hunger strike in prison "in solidarity with the Palestinian people", reports AFP.
Israel's Ministry for Foreign Affairs denies that the detained activists from the Gaza convoy are being mistreated in Israeli custody.
At the same time, ultranationalist Ben-Gvir is boasting about the situation.
I went and visited the Ketziot prison and was proud that we are treating the "convoy activists" like terrorist supporters. Whoever supports terrorism is a terrorist and deserves to be treated like a terrorist, he says according to The Times of Israel.
