The announcement is made when Danon speaks before the UN Security Council. The UN ambassador repeats Israel's law that prohibits UNRWA from operating in Israel, which was approved by the Israeli parliament last autumn. The decision, which makes it virtually impossible for UNRWA to operate in the occupied territories, is final, according to Danon.
UNRWA provides millions of Palestinians in, among other places, Gaza, Jordan, and Lebanon with education, healthcare, and economic assistance, but has repeatedly been accused by Israel of having terrorists among its employees.
UNRWA's chief Philippe Lazzarini calls Israel's actions against the organization an "unrelenting attack", and says that it harms Palestinians' lives and future.
It erodes their trust in the international community and jeopardizes all prospects for peace and security.
