Several years ago, Israel's intelligence service reportedly gained access to the cameras, allowing Mossad to identify bodyguards of Ayatollah Khamenei and other Iranian figures.

"We know Tehran as well as Jerusalem," an anonymous intelligence source told the newspaper.

Using AI tools, the Israelis reportedly reviewed large amounts of footage from the cameras, which ultimately led them to Saturday's meeting attended by Khamenei and several members of Iran's top brass. Israel then struck.

The road cameras are believed to be part of the Iranian regime's extensive surveillance apparatus. During waves of protests in the country, they are said to have been used to identify and arrest regime critics.
