Israel has begun demolishing premises in East Jerusalem where the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has operated.

Bulldozers demolished buildings at UNRWA's former headquarters on Tuesday.

UNRWA's head in the West Bank, Roland Friedrich, described it as the culmination of two years of attacks on the organization's operations in East Jerusalem. Later in the afternoon, Israeli forces fired tear gas at a Palestinian vocational school just north of the city.

Israel has banned UNRWA, based on Israeli allegations that the agency has employed and provided shelter to numerous members of the terrorist group Hamas. According to the allegations, many of them participated in Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023.

The UN has largely denied the allegations. An investigation found that nine UNRWA employees may have been involved. They were fired.
