Israel's military has not provided details on how far into Lebanese territory it has advanced. However, a Lebanese military source says Israeli soldiers are between five and nine kilometers into the country.
Israel claims the ground invasion is being carried out to prevent attacks by the Shiite militia Hezbollah. Defense Minister Israel Katz says it is intended to establish a “security zone” in Lebanon.
Over 1.2 million people are estimated to have fled Israeli bombs and ground troops, and more than 1,500 have been killed, since Israel escalated its attacks in Lebanon on March 2.
