The latest period of restraint between Israel and Syria was broken on Tuesday when a number of drones were launched from southern Syria towards targets in Israel. Air raid sirens sounded in northern Israel and the Golan Heights in connection with the attacks.

Israel's military responded with artillery fire towards targets in southern Syria, reports the Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post.

After the incident, Defense Minister Katz chose to launch a direct attack on Syria's transitional leader, President al-Sharaa.

Katz said that the president "is directly responsible for every threat and every shooting at the state of Israel, and a full-scale response (from Israel) will come as soon as possible".

Reports of drone attacks from Syrian territory came at around the same time as drones were launched from the Islamist Huthi movement's areas in Yemen. It was unclear whether the attacks from the two countries were coordinated; it was also unknown which group was behind the drone attacks from Syria.

This was the first time drones were launched from Syrian territory since President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in December 2024.
