2025 was a deadly year for journalists around the world, with 129 reported deaths. It was also the deadliest year since the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) began collecting data over three decades ago.
According to CPJ, Israel accounted for a clear majority of the deaths.
“We are all in danger when journalists are killed for reporting the news,” CPJ Executive Director Jodie Ginsberg said in a statement.
Over three-quarters of all deaths in 2025 occurred in conflict situations.
In Mexico, six journalists were killed in 2025, and in the Philippines three journalists were shot dead.
