Israel says it has received remains from the Red Cross in Gaza, the Haaretz newspaper reports. The announcement comes after Hamas said it had returned the remains of a hostage.

The return is believed to be for one of the last two hostages taken by Hamas in the coordinated attack on October 7, 2023, which sparked the war. The two who have not been handed over so far are an Israeli and a Thai citizen.

It is still unclear who Tuesday's remains belong to, but Israeli authorities are in "continuous contact with the families of the two dead hostages," according to a statement.

The hostage exchange is part of the US-brokered ceasefire agreement between the terrorist group Hamas and Israel. In exchange for each dead hostage, Israel will return 15 dead Palestinians to the Gaza Strip.
