The Islamist rebel group ADF is reported to be behind the bloody attack and several nearby buildings were set on fire.

The victims' bodies are still at the site where the tragedy occurred and volunteers are preparing for how we will bury them in a mass grave, says Dieudonne Katanabo, coordinator for civil society, to AFP and continues:

Last night around 9 pm (local time) we heard gunfire near the parish church, so far we have seen 35 killed.

Several people have been seriously injured and others kidnapped.

Earlier in July, ADF killed 66 civilians in an act at the border with Uganda.

The Islamist group has ties to the Islamic State and is active in the border area between Congo-Kinshasa and Uganda.
