In February, the US completed the transfer of 5,700 IS prisoners from Syria to a prison in Baghdad that was previously under US control and is located on the grounds of Baghdad International Airport.
"The areas around Baghdad International Airport and the airport prison have been subjected to repeated attacks," Justice Ministry spokesman Ahmed Laibi said in a statement, according to AFP.
He added that some of the shelling hit close to the facility, which "raises concerns about the security of the prison, which houses high-risk terrorists."
