Saudi Arabia has executed six Iranians who were convicted of drug smuggling, according to the country's interior ministry.
Iran has summoned Saudi Arabia's ambassador to protest against the unacceptable violation of "rules and norms according to international law", according to the foreign ministry in Tehran.
Saudi Arabia has executed 338 people in 2024, according to a compilation by the AFP news agency. It is the highest number in decades and significantly more than in 2023 when 170 were executed.
Of those executed, 117 were said to be drug smugglers. Saudi Arabia has stepped up its fight against drugs in recent years since the market for the central stimulant captagon has grown.
