The first official death toll, according to news agencies, came in a brief bulletin announcing that 2,427 of the dead are civilians or members of the security forces. It is not clear who the others are.
The figure is far below that reported by foreign organizations. The US-based HRANA, which makes its calculations based on data from inside Iran, reports over 4,500 deaths and says that more than 13,000 people may have been killed by police and security forces during the protests.
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, admitted last week that "several thousand" had died in the protests, but claimed that the United States was to blame.
