The attack led to a fire on board, which was extinguished. All crew members are safe and there is no confirmed environmental impact, UKMTO writes on its website.
The attack reportedly took place northeast of Khasab, Oman.
It has not been proven that this is the same attack that Iran claims to have carried out. The oil tanker is said to have sailed under the Togolese flag and caught fire in connection with the attack, reports the state news agency Irna.
Trade through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely restricted since the US and Israel attacked Iran in February this year, triggering a wider conflict in the region. Iran is blocking the strait and the US Navy is blocking Iranian maritime traffic in the area.
