An Instagram photo showing Azmoun with Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum was described as a disloyal act, and Azmoun was subjected to harsh criticism on state television, writes Reuters.
The suspension makes it highly unlikely that Azmoun will play in the World Cup in North America this summer. He is considered one of Iran's top players and currently plays for club side Shabab Al-Ahli in the United Arab Emirates.
At the same time, Iran's entire participation in the World Cup is in jeopardy due to the conflict with the United States. However, federation chairman Mehdi Taj believes that the country "will boycott the United States, but not the World Cup."
