As the conflict has spread from the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz to the Red Sea, it is possible, in response to further warfare, that the front will be further expanded, says adviser Yahya Rahim Safavi in a video published by the state news agency Fars.
According to Safavi, this means that the war could reach the Indian Ocean and possibly "beyond it."
The Iran war broke out in late February, when the US and Israel attacked the country, citing Tehran's move towards developing nuclear weapons. The first attacks killed the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was appointed as his successor but has not appeared in public.
In June, Iran and the United States agreed on a memorandum of understanding that was intended to lead to a ceasefire and peace, but just weeks later new hostilities erupted.
Trade through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely restricted since the outbreak of the war, with Iran blocking the strait and the US blocking Iranian maritime traffic. In addition, the Iran-allied Houthi movement in Yemen has consolidated its control over the equally important Bab al-Mandab Strait towards the Red Sea.
