Iran says two oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz

Two oil tankers have struck mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the state-run Iranian news agency Irna reported. Fires are said to have broken out on the ships.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said overnight on Sunday, according to Irna, that the ships had "violated regulations", taken "unapproved routes" and hit mines in different parts of the Strait of Hormuz.

It is unclear how extensive the fires are.

Since the Iran-Iran war broke out at the end of February, the country has severely restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, the United States has imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Iran has claimed several times this week that oil tankers have hit mines in the strait.
