Iran Says Two More Ships Hit Mines in the Strait of Hormuz

According to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, two more ships have hit mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

The two tankers reportedly exploded after hitting naval mines while using an “unauthorized” route through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Revolutionary Guard claims the ships had switched off their navigation and identification systems and, with military support from the United States, attempted to pass through the strait secretly.

The ships’ origins are unclear. An Iranian statement said one was still burning on Sunday.

In the past three weeks, Iran has reported about 30 incidents involving ships in the Strait of Hormuz, at least 20 of them caused by mines. The US military command Centcom accused Iran on Monday of killing more than 20 civilian sailors at sea in recent months.

Control of the Strait of Hormuz has been disputed since the start of the war between Iran and the United States.
