The incident reportedly caused an explosion and a fire in the ship's engine room, state-run Iranian media reported. The tanker is alleged to have tried to pass through the strait via an unauthorized route.
Recently, there have been repeated reports of ships being hit by naval mines around the Strait of Hormuz.
Trade traffic through the strait has been severely restricted since the US and Israel attacked Iran in February this year, followed by recurring Iranian attacks on ships.
