Iran's state news agency Mehr reported that "the sound of several explosions" was heard in parts of Kharg island, from where much of Iran's oil exports originate. Iran said the United States had targeted an Iranian tanker 40 kilometres off the island's coast. No one was reported injured in the alleged attack.
Two explosions were heard in the city of Jask, according to Iran's state news agency Fars.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said earlier on Tuesday that Iranian forces had seized a US unmanned underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz in a "complex operation."
The US military command is not commenting on Iran's alleged seizure, but says the American underwater vehicle had stopped functioning at least a day before the seizure.
Trade traffic in the Persian Gulf is severely restricted in the Strait of Hormuz due to the war with Iran.
