The tanker, which is subject to US sanctions, was carrying Iranian oil. The reason for its forced return to Iran is not clear from the statement.
The tanker is considered to have disrupted oil traffic and "the interests of the Iranian nation," the statement issued via the Tasnim news agency said.
The ship is named Ocean Koi. The 228-meter crude oil tanker, which recently changed its name to Jin Li, has been sailing in the Gulf of Oman just southeast of the Strait of Hormuz, maritime traffic websites show, but the ship's last published position was recorded on Thursday night.
