“Currently, the Strait of Hormuz is fully controlled by the Islamic Republic's navy,” an Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander said.
The narrow strait is home to large quantities of oil and gas from countries surrounding the Persian Gulf. Iran has attacked several commercial ships in the area.
The AFP news agency reports that, according to analysis firm Kpler, traffic through the strait has decreased by around 90 percent since the war broke out.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday offered US insurance and a military escort to shipping companies. French President Emmanuel Macron has also initiated a coalition to secure maritime traffic.
