It was on Thursday that EU member states agreed to label the feared Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, following the recent bloody crackdown on protests in Iran, in which thousands of activists are reported to have been killed.
The Revolutionary Guard consists of ground forces, an air force, a navy, an intelligence service, and special forces. Its primary mission is to protect Iran's religious regime. The EU's terrorist designation equates the Revolutionary Guard with movements such as Hamas and al-Qaeda.
Iran's decision was announced by Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, speaker of Iran's parliament and a former member of the Revolutionary Guard.
It is unclear what practical significance this will have.
