Khamenei was born in Mashhad, Iran's second largest city, where his father is also buried.
Following Khamenei's death, power has temporarily passed to a three-person council that includes President Masoud Pezeshkian. On Monday evening, it was reported that a permanent successor is about to be appointed.
Earlier on Tuesday, Israel stated that it had destroyed the building in Qom, south of the capital Tehran, that was the seat of the so-called Council of Experts, the body tasked with appointing the successor.
