Iran's armed forces took "swift action" and stopped two tankers from sailing through the strait, according to a statement published in state media such as the Tasnim news agency.
The Wall Street Journal reported on two ships sailing towards the strait on Sunday morning. The ships made sudden U-turns near the island of Larak, where the Iranian coast guard has a presence.
No merchant or tanker ships have passed, according to publicly available traffic information.
Several ships were able to pass through the strait during the hours it was said to be open earlier this weekend, while others that were en route turned back after Iran's announcement.
