Iran has executed at least 1,000 people so far in 2025, according to Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR). Just in the past week, 64 executions have been carried out, on average over nine per day, reports IHR, which counts and verifies executions in Iran daily.

The figure for 2025 is already the highest since the organization started keeping statistics in 2008, and there are still over three months left of the year. Last year, a total of 975 executions were registered.

The number reflects the cases that the organization has been able to confirm. The true number is likely even higher, notes IHR in a press release.

”In recent months, the Islamic Republic has launched a campaign of mass executions in Iran's prisons, the scope of which – in the absence of serious international reactions – increases every day”, says IHR's director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam in a statement.

According to activists, Iran is using the death penalty to a greater extent today than the country has done in the last 30 years.
