Esmail Fekri was arrested in 2023 and sentenced for espionage on behalf of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad.
This is the third execution in a short time of people accused of espionage for Israel. Over the weekend, the organization Iran Human Rights warned that the war between Israel and Iran entails a "serious risk" that Iran will quickly execute those sentenced to death for espionage for Israel – including the Swedish-Iranian doctor Ahmadreza Djalali who was imprisoned in Iran in 2016.
Esmail Fekri was imprisoned, just like Djalali, in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran, but was transferred to Ghezel Hesar prison north of the capital in February.
On Monday, Iran's judiciary promises "swift trials" for suspected Israel collaborators, reports the news agency AFP.
