Negotiations between the countries have "reached a deadlock" and US President Donald Trump must act, according to Rezaei.

"The ball is in Trump's court," he told American CNN.

Iran has demanded that twelve billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets be released in an initial agreement, and then another twelve billion at a later stage, CNN reports.

US sources tell the media company that releasing the assets at this point would give up significant leverage in the talks. But Rezaei insists it would build trust:

"This is a test that the United States must pass."
