We have said that if Iran's demands are met, security in the Strait of Hormuz could be restored and negotiations could resume soon, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said, according to AFP.
He added that contacts with the United States were still ongoing through mediators, but that “everything depends” on how the United States chooses to act and whether it agrees to Iran's demands.
The Strait of Hormuz cannot be reopened as long as the blockade remains in place and Iran's demands are not met. If these conditions are met, we can discuss how the process should continue, he said, according to the IRNA news agency.
On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said Iran was cooperating with Qatar - without negotiating directly with the United States - on a peace plan that would make it possible to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days.
The US maintains a naval blockade in the Persian Gulf in response to Iran's restrictions on traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and has tightened sanctions on Iran. At the same time, it is now threatening new attacks if the country does not agree to US demands in a deal.
Iran has previously said it is willing to open the Strait of Hormuz under a seven-day plan, provided that “certain conditions” are met. Trump then reacted forcefully to media reports that he might consider meeting with the Iranians.
