Iran and USA Engage in Talks Amid Rising Tensions

USA's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have spoken on the phone on several occasions since Israel began attacking Iran last week, according to three diplomatic sources for the news agency Reuters.

The purpose of the talks is said to have been to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Araghchi is said to have clarified that Tehran is not willing to resume negotiations with the US on a new nuclear energy agreement unless Israel first ceases its attacks, according to the sources.

One of the diplomats states that Araghchi however said that Iran is willing to "show flexibility in the nuclear energy issue" if the US pressures Israel to end the war.

When Israel's large-scale attack on Iran began, the Americans had been in negotiations with Tehran on a new nuclear energy agreement for several weeks. The negotiations have been taking place since a previous agreement between Iran and the Western world from 2015 collapsed in 2018 when US President Donald Trump abandoned the agreement.

The agreement aimed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
