An American investigator concludes that the journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed on the West Bank in 2022, was shot intentionally by an Israeli soldier. His opinion goes against the US's public stance.

Shireen Abu Akleh was probably hit by shots from an Israeli military position, but there is no reason to believe that the shots were intentional, was the official statement from the US government after the raid on the West Bank in 2022.

But the American officials who investigated the incident were not in agreement with the US official conclusions, according to the former colonel Steve Gabavics who was one of the investigators. Some of them were convinced that the shots were intentional, according to several people who worked with the investigation for The New York Times.

Gabavics now expresses concern that the government has mitigated its public conclusions to appease the Israeli government.

51-year-old Shireen Abu Akleh was killed when she reported on clashes on the occupied West Bank. She was wearing a press vest and a helmet when she was shot dead.

The Israeli military initially blamed armed Palestinians, but later stated that she was probably shot by an Israeli soldier who had "misidentified" her.
