The ban will apply from July 1, 2027, and cover all animal species, according to investigator Eva-Lotta Hedin. The announcement will have little practical effect because the fur industry, consisting of all 27 remaining mink breeders, ceased operations in 2025 after receiving government closure support.

"The government has previously decided on support to enable the voluntary phase-out of mink farming in an orderly manner," says Minister of Rural Affairs Peter Kullgren (KD) in a press release.

The Rights of Animals welcomes the investigation.

"A comprehensive ban on fur farming will be the only right thing to do going forward," says Tina Hogevik in a press release.
