When it comes to the breeds American Bully, Amstaff and American Bulldog, more than a third of the owners are convicted, according to Uppdrag Granskning.
As a comparison, only seven percent of the owners of the most common dogs, Labrador and Golden Retriever, have been convicted of a crime.
When it comes to specific violent crimes, the difference is even greater. There, the proportion of convicted among pitbull owners is 13 times larger than among the most common breeds, according to UG's investigation.
Over the past five years, owners of American Bully have topped the list. The crossbreed has become increasingly popular in Sweden.
The program also raises several serious cases where fighting dogs have attacked people and other dogs, and where authorities have acted inadequately.
Unfortunately, it is so that they also attract criminal individuals who use dogs for the wrong purposes, says Sirkku Sarenbo, university lecturer at Linnaeus University, to UG.
