More and more intrusions are being reported at masts in Sweden.

This year, the state-owned company Teracom, which owns Sweden's 54 large TV and radio masts, has made 50 police reports after people have entered the mast areas. The figure last year was around 15, reports Sveriges Radio Ekot.

These are people who enter our protected objects, cross borders, take photographs in such places. It can be vandalism, for example, and then one cannot rule out that some amount may be about intelligence gathering, says Teracom's security manager Stefan Steijnick to Ekot.

15 people have been arrested for mast intrusion in the past year, and in several cases, police investigations are ongoing.

The reason why the masts are under surveillance is that the signals from the TV and radio masts must be able to continue to be transmitted in the event of a severe crisis or war if the telephone network is shut down, in order to be able to reach out with information to the public.
