The four best Nations League group winners who do not qualify directly for the World Championship (twelve places) or for the playoffs (twelve places) via the World Championship qualifiers will receive playoff spots thanks to their performances in the Nations League.
Then, an interrupted match between Romania and Kosovo could come to hinder Sweden. Romania has 15 points, but Friday's match against Kosovo has not yet been decided.
Crushed Azerbaijan
The Swedish national team had, as is well known, already secured the group win in the C division before Tuesday's match against Azerbaijan – but it was still important to collect more points than the other group winners at the C level.
Sweden did the job and won with a clear 6–0. Thus, the blue and yellow are up as the best group winner with 16 points and a better goal difference than North Macedonia – but whether they will keep the top spot will be decided at a desk.
How Romania–Kosovo ends will be decided by the European Football Association Uefa, since Kosovo's players left the pitch in protest during injury time at 0–0, after Romanian supporters sang provocative chants.
"We should know beforehand"
If Uefa decides that the match between Romania and Kosovo should end 0–0, Sweden will be the best winner in the C division. If Romania is instead awarded the win with 3–0, Sweden will be the second-best winner.
"It's between us and Romania, and it's obviously a bit strange. Romania's match against Kosovo was interrupted, and Uefa has to make a decision about the outcome of that match. When you talk about fair play, we should know about the decision before we play, but we don't get that", said national team captain Jon Dahl Tomasson to the association's website before the match.
