International Parcel Deliveries to Sweden Fall 5.4% After New EU Customs Fee

The new customs duties have significantly affected the number of international parcels sent to Sweden.

During the third quarter, the number of parcels from foreign online retailers fell by 5.4 percent to 19.5 million. This meant that the share of international parcels in the total volume fell from 32.9 percent to 28.8 percent, its lowest level so far this year, according to the Swedish Transport Companies’ Parcel Index.

“We are now seeing a clear break in the trend after a long period of sharply rising parcel volumes from abroad. It is interesting that this coincides with the EU’s new customs rules for low-value shipments,” says Tina Thorsell, Head of Public Policy at the Swedish Transport Companies, in a press release.

On July 1, the EU introduced a customs fee of three euros on goods in low-value shipments from countries outside the EU.
