The Ukrainian has worn the helmet during training for the Olympics, but has been told he will be banned from using it in competition. Instead, he will be allowed to wear a mourning armband, on the grounds that political statements are prohibited during the Olympics.
"We feel this is a good compromise," said Mark Adams, spokesman for the IOC.
However, Heraskevych is not satisfied with the decision and refuses to budge:
"I've used it in training and used it today. I'll use it tomorrow and on race day," he says, adding:
- I can't understand how this helmet could hurt anyone. It's there to honor athletes.
