The fragile peace agreement in the Ethiopian Tigray region is threatened by tensions between rival factions within the Tigrean resistance group TPLF.
The development has prompted the African Union (AU) to express deep concern.
The peace agreement was signed in 2022, following a two-year brutal war between the Ethiopian government and TPLF. The war is estimated to have claimed 600,000 lives.
However, divisions have emerged among the TPLF leadership on how to implement the terms of the peace agreement. In combination with deteriorating relations with Addis Ababa and neighboring Eritrea, it raises fears that a new conflict may break out.
The AU emphasizes in a statement that compliance with the agreement is crucial to "maintaining the hard-won peace".
