The devastating fires that ravaged California last month are the costliest for the insurance industry ever, according to the German reinsurance giant Munich Re, which operates as an insurance company for other insurance companies.
According to an initial estimate, the company expects claims equivalent to approximately 13.4 billion kronor for losses related to the fires. However, it is still difficult to assess exactly what the final figure will be, writes Munich Re in a statement. The reason is stated as a "complexity in the losses that have occurred".
Thousands of buildings were destroyed in the fires that broke out on January 7 this year. The total cost is estimated to be up to approximately 2,920 billion kronor, according to the forecasting company Accuweather. No official calculations from the authorities are available yet.
