Insomniac is known for the cutesy "Ratchet & Clank" series and its successes with the good-hearted Spider-Man. So some raised eyebrows when it became known that the studio would tackle Wolverine.

"We had proven to ourselves and to the world that we could do something special. So we had agreed with Marvel that we wanted to try something new, a new character. And that's when we were most excited about Wolverine," says Mike Daly.

“Tough time”

In addition, the studio is shifting its focus to an older target group. It is 18+, which is especially noticeable in the blood spurting and enemies being mutilated. Finding the right tone was not easy, and in some versions it became too much. The gut feeling said no, because Insomniac didn't want it to be like "Mortal Kombat" or the TV series "The Boys".

"We realized the problem was that there was some kind of display of sadism, and that's not what the character is. And that helped us get it right," says Daly.

In late 2023, the company was hit by a hacker attack, and material from the game was leaked, as well as personal information about employees. Daly emphasizes that the developers tried not to be influenced by the reactions to the game itself.

It was a tough time, but we got through it by supporting each other and we also got a lot of support from our fans, says Daly.

Not open world

Gameplay-wise, the biggest difference from “Spider-Man” is that it’s not an open world, but a linear narrative. Daly explains that this allows for a clearer progression in the story.

We want it to feel like you have a job to do and that you are constantly on the move. You are not wandering around aimlessly.

The idea of stealth, to avoid enemies, was something that changed during development. Originally, the creators had envisioned many more such elements - but playtesters questioned them, and a lot went in the trash. The result was a faster and more forgiving version, where the player is not punished if discovered.

"We realized that Wolverine never backs down from a fight - so he doesn't care if he gets caught. He doesn't try to be clever or outsmart his opponents, so he doesn't need diversions, and he doesn't sit around calculating or planning his moves," says Daly.

"Marvel's Wolverine" is a story-driven linear third-person action game developed by American Insomniac ("Spider-Man", "Ratchet & Clank") for the PlayStation 5.

The player takes control of Wolverine (Logan), a superhero in Marvel's X-Men universe, who is equipped with long claws that extend from between his knuckles. He can heal himself, making him essentially immortal. In the films, he has been played by Hugh Jackman. In the game, the title role is played by Australian Liam McIntyre.

“Marvel's Wolverine” has a 78 rating on Metacritic, which collects player ratings, which is worse than previous Insomniac games for PS5. It will be released for PlayStation 5 on September 15th.
