Ingebrigtsen has a long injury history behind him, and in February he underwent surgery for a hamstring problem. The Norwegian last competed before the European Championships in Birmingham at the World Championships in September, where he finished tenth in the 5,000 metres.
But on his comeback, no one could stop the reigning Olympic champion. On Monday evening, his fourth consecutive European Championship gold medal at the distance came after a strong finish in the race. The winning time was 13:15.29.
"I dreamed about this moment two weeks ago when I signed up," Ingebrigtsen said in the mixed zone.
It was Ingebrigtsen's seventh European Championship gold. The silver went to Germany's Florian Bremm and the bronze to Etienne Daguinos of France.
