In July, Kerr broke a 27-year-old world record at the Diamond League meeting in London. The 28-year-old ran a mile, about 1,600 metres, in 3:42.66.

But he is not taking part in the European Championships, which are currently under way. Kerr decided early on to skip the championships in Birmingham.

A decision that is now being criticised by Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who earlier this week won gold in the 5,000 metres.

We all have different plans, but I can never see myself skipping a championship, says Ingebrigtsen and continues:

Everyone should be disappointed.

Josh Kerr won silver in the 1,500 metres at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
