A railway worker died and his colleague was seriously injured in an accident at the Malmö freight yard in April last year. Now the employer faces a fine of 250,000 kronor, the newspaper Arbetet reports.

The track workers carried out work in the track area without shutting down train traffic. Instead, the train warning method was used, which meant one of them would keep an eye out for trains. However, at the location where the collision occurred, the method was not allowed to be used.

To avoid a fine, employer Infranord must tighten safety measures, according to the Swedish Work Environment Authority. In future, two-person work teams may only be assigned tasks that can be performed by a single worker, since one person needs to be set aside to warn of trains. The company must also ensure that staff receive correct, written information about the tasks to be performed.
