"Some missed out on the beautiful game, the emotions, the celebrations, the laughter, the tears and the joy. They were so consumed by hatred and criticism," Infantino writes.
The FIFA boss does not single out any person or organization in his accusations, but writes that it concerns people with "pen and paper" and people who sit "behind screens and spread hatred and false rumors."
"But while you do that, we at FIFA are on the front lines, organizing, working hard and delivering the best show in the world," he writes.
Defending the Balogun decision
In his post, Infantino defends, among other things, the controversial decision regarding US striker Folarin Balogun. After US President Donald Trump called Infantino personally, FIFA's disciplinary committee lifted the suspension in the round of 16 for Balogun, who had received a red card in the previous match.
“Questionable rulings or ‘strange’ disciplinary decisions, such as potentially incorrect red or yellow cards, or subsequent decisions not to suspend players, are routine and widely accepted in some of the world’s biggest leagues,” Infantino writes.
He also responds to criticism regarding the visa issues that prevailed during the World Cup. Somali referee Omar Artan was not allowed into the United States, and Iran had to move its World Cup base to Mexico even though the team played its matches in the United States.
“Only joy and happiness”
"You mentioned the few people who were denied visas and overlooked the millions who were approved from all parts of the world. Because football unites the world, and that was impressively proven this summer," Infantino writes.
According to the FIFA president, the five-week championship was carried out without any serious incidents.
"We experienced no violence, no incidents, 100 percent safety and security. Only joy and happiness."
The World Cup was held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Spain became world champions after a 1–0 victory in the final against Argentina.
