The cubs, believed to be from the Indonesian island of Sumatra, are suspected of having been smuggled into India and a criminal investigation has been launched.
The Sumatran orangutan is critically endangered and according to the latest estimate, from 2016, there were just over 13,500 individuals left.
The five cubs are reported to be in good health and are currently being cared for at a zoo.
