The hardest hit area is the northeastern state of Assam, where around 90 people have died, around 50 of them in Sivasagar district, where several places are still under water.
"The devastation here is unlike anything these areas have experienced before," writes state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on X.
In nearby Jharkhand, several farmers in open fields have been killed by lightning strikes. At the same time, the Indian Meteorological Department is warning of continued heavy rain in the coming days.
