The Permanent Court of Arbitration, also known as the Hague Tribunal, in the Netherlands ruled on Monday that New Delhi must comply with the agreement reached with Islamabad in 1960. The agreement regulates how water resources are to be distributed across six rivers that rise in India and flow through Pakistan.
India announced in spring 2025 that it was leaving the deal, partly in response to Indian accusations that Pakistan supported a deadly attack on tourists on the Indian side of Kashmir. Pakistan denies involvement in the attack.
India's Ministry of External Affairs announced that it does not accept the arbitration award.
