The number of children under 15 years old who are brought to court as witnesses has increased significantly this year, shows statistics from the Prosecution Authority, reports Swedish Radio Ekot.

Until and including September, 68 children under 15 years had been brought to court this year. The same figure for the whole of 2024 was 38, and the year before that the figure was only seven.

Since the proportion of children who also participate in this type of crime is increasing, it is an expected effect that the number of cases with verdicts of guilt also increases, says Maria Franzén, prosecutor at the Prosecution Authority's development center, to the radio.

In 43 of the 68 cases this year, the children are suspected of being involved in murder, murder plans or attempted murder.

A verdict of guilt means that a court takes a position on the issue of guilt without imposing any penalty since children under 15 years are not liable to punishment.
